Zelda makes it into the 8bitX Hall of Fame!!!

For 15 weeks The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time slayed it's competition, rendering 1/2 of it's dominant victories via shut-outs. Never challenged, a favorite to get into the Hall since the tournament was getting started, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time saw it's toughest competition yet. A rival of near equal dominance, a rival who's reputation permeated through all of video-game lore. Final Fantasy 7.
This is a dream match-up which storylines can be written from better weapon, main character, love interest, villian, mode of transportation, hero, and so on and so forth.
The war began on this night March 3rd 2010, and roughly 2 hours later fate would intervene, a shiny object glistened in the light with the hearts of those who had spent their lives with these games hung in the balance. She was swift with her decision, and as the coin landed on the heads, I hung mine.
"Ladies and gentlemen" I said with a regrettable smile, "It's HEADS, the winner of the 32/64 bit tournament is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time".

TenchuX writes in a poem during the battle:
I looked high to the clouds to see what was before us, when down from the sky descended Link of course... and with a right hand slash he took off Randy's head, and not a second later Justin was dead. I’m not sure if they made it to heaven, I am just glad two votes were lost for Final Fantasy VII.

Justin weighs in on the Final Battle: Zelda Ocarina of Time vs Final Fantasy 7

This is a near-impossible decision. Both games are nostalgic, but in different ways.

The Zelda series has always stood as an example of simplicity and purity in storytelling: Link's adventures are modeled after Shigeru Miyamoto's childhood exploring woods and caves. This is the case for OoT, but we also see Link as an adult facing a very real threat from Ganon. The high point of this game, and the feature I remember most, is the gameplay. I'll always remember how to get through all the dungeons and beat all the bosses. The music was great as well.

Of course FF7 has a great (if not convoluted and poorly translated) plot, one of the best in video game history. Cloud is a complex character with some real issues (everyone he gets close to seems to die), and I've never been as motivated to defeat a villian as I have to beat Sephiroth. Cloud's struggle to find self-worth and a cause to fight for, the loss of Aerith, and the final confrontation with Sephiroth are all moments that I'll remember for the rest of my life. I definitely won't remember most of the intermediary moments and random battles, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game. And, of course, who doesn't get chills when they listen to the FF7 soundtrack and the numerous live performances and covers of it.

How am I supposed to decide here? Both stand out among the greatest games ever, and both envoke fond memories. This is seriously going to take a good deal of thought and reflection!

8bit Extravaganza Tournament Update: Final Battle Set!

Wow we have set ourselves up for the Championship show with 2 games left standing.

Final Battle for the Championship:
Zelda: Ocarina of Time vs Final Fantasy VII

Suprisingly the game that mopped the floor was Zelda shutting out Goldeneye 7-0, where as FFVII squeaked by 4-3 with the final vote going to TenchuX via the phone call to the show.
Join us next week at 9pm Eastern for the championship show which will not disappoint!!
