Nintendo Channel
So I boot up the Wii for some Brawl action yesterday, and I have 1 message waiting for me, from Nintendo. The message informs me that a new Channel is available called the "Nintendo" Channel. Immediately I go and grab this channel, and while it's downloading I remembered reading something about a DS channel available in Japan a few months ago. I hoped this was it.
The channel downloads and I open it up. A video starts playing hyping up WiiFit and MarioKart, Brawl, and other games. Below a "VideoList" button shows you a list of the videos available. I select a DS game for Brain Age 2, and then hit the big red "Information" button. Once in there I scrolled down and found the "Download a demo for this title" text and we were off.

My Wii is now a DS download station. F'N awesome.

Demos tried:

Brain Age 2
GamePlay: Brain exercises if you wanted more tests. I failed miserably on the Rock Paper Scissors test, they show a hand and you have to either win or lose. For example if they show paper and it says win, you yell out "Scissor". Well I did suck at this but I will say that Scissor had the hardest time being deciphered by the game. It actually stopped and restarted due to the fact that it was having trouble understanding me.

Verdict: If you don't have Brain Age, pick it up. Since I do I would like to see more puzzles from the game in order for it to make me want to pick it up.

Jam Session
GamePlay: Very interesting game, lots of potential, clumsy interface. Had a lot of fun with this one, you can strum a guitar string, and based on the stylus' direction and speed the guitar sounds different. Very intiutive. Also, you have a chord selection by using the D-Pad or buttons based on your hand selection. This also worked pretty well. However due to things being locked for the full game you only had the 4 default chords to play, which was disappointing. The best part was you could record your songs, and they encourage you to sing with the built in microphone to have a full on jam session. But wait! The recording does not record the vocals! DAMMIT!!

Verdict:So all in all a very good concept, but due to the lack of a good interface for the menus and effects, plus the lack of recording the voice, I don't see this one being picked up.....pun intended.

Disney Friends
GamePlay: Kill yourself. The control scheme is just wrong, the graphics are trying to do too much and the objective of the game is pointless.

Verdict: Boil water, reach into bottom of pot, repeat.

Rayman Raving Rabbits 2:
GamePlay: Mini-game madness. I chose 1 minigame where you had to drag certain colored boxes into the funnel? and then you had a certain time limit to complete the task. The time limit wasn't clear and the dragging of the boxes was good, I just sucked.

Verdict: For quick fun, pick it up, it's nuts!

Super Smash Bros Melee and Wii improvements
Started off last night watching Mythbusters, they did the ol Mentos and Diet Coke, plus add some rock salt and then it's all over, 34 feet was the highest they achieved. That being said I turned on the Wii for some Super Smash Bros Melee last night. I decided to screw around and try some of the challenges, and the first one that struck me was the "Home Run Hitting Contest". I choose Link because if anyone would hit a homerun I could picture, it would be Link so there you go. The goal here is to hit this marshmellowish creature off the platform as far as you possibly can, and it's measured on the right in what looks like a long jumper's setup.

First attempt: 5.2 ft
Yes indeed the mighty Link swung his sword of power and hit the marshmellow 5.2 feet. The more I think back the creepier the marshmellow creature really is.

Longest Hit: 82.6
This remarkable feat was performed by hitting the creature up in the air, and as it decends hit the highly flamable but delicious creature with a charge shot (-> and B). The timing is difficult since my experience with the game is so limited. Yeah I suck.

I also attempted some of the marathons they have, picking up Mario this time, 15 men marathon, 100 men marathon and so on. I defeated the 15 men marathon, do not remember the time, but the 100 men marathon was my goal. At first it seemed impossible, then after a few tries I got within 10 of the milestone, and every time some douchebag kicked me like Cinder from Killer Instinct to send me flying to the realm of frustration and failure. The closest I came was down to 3 guys left, and then BOOM kicked off the level because my % was over 300. I gave up like a 10 year old when the game starts cheating.

Giving up on that I choose Mario for a Classic quest to beat the game. Difficulty = Hard. I run through a few guys, then I lose to all those baseball bat wielding bastards, so it asks me to continue. I look up on the screen and my selection is in red and on the left, so I move the selection over to the right, see the color change from red to yellow and I hit the button. Only I have ended my game. All my progress was lost, and because the traditional color of STOP and the automatic selection of NO in fighting games when you lose is a tradition. Why in the mother-fucking-hell is YES in RED!? honestly!!! I know I should have read the words but I know I am not the only one to do this. If I am then my mistake and I deserve the fate I chose, but if not MUAHHAAH then I'm not such an idiot.
When I did restart the Classic mode I came across the cruelest fate I've ever been dealt in Smash Bros. Usually you have to take on a team of one character. Tell my why I had to take on Team C. Falcon!!!!!! IMPOSSIBLE. I didn't even hit 1 of them off before I was up over 200%!!!!! RIDICULOUS!!

Cool Moment:
What is cool is the pause mode and graphics in Smash Bros melee. In the pause mode you can rotate around the characters 170° and it's pretty cool. It is my firm belief that Gamecube was EXTREMELY underrated when it came to graphical prowress. The targeted audience of the Gamecube was what led people to believe that it was underpowered, but if you look at Resident Evil 4, it was one of the most graphically intensive games of it's generation.

Wii Updates

You can send email through your wii, so expect some posts from the Wii browser. Also they added some ability to add your mii to everything, from the console to the emails, and you can also have an address book of your friends' wii consoles and their associated Miis. I like the improvement to integrate the web if one chooses to do so, it eases my fears of Nintendo abandoning the online route, since no new Wii games support online multiplayer.

I read on the Wii News channel that Microsoft is trying to woo Japanese RPG gamers to Xbox 360....

Also updates to Wii shop channel, they had a "preview" of Metriod Prime 3 Corruption, I was hoping for a demo, but only a GUI with videos, none of which I watched, and a cool background image you can unveil by using the Wiimote.

Since I hadn't been on the Wii in ages it's a good feeling to see things progressing on their console, and it's good to see some progress regarding the online community.

Another good thing is the web browser is still free!!
