Will's Game of the Week: Shatterhand -Area A
Shatterhand is friggin awesome!
It's a mix of Double Dragon with the pace of Contra, and a little bit of the platforming elements from games such as Mario and Megaman.
Shatterhand is not a 1 dimensional game however. There are elements of RPG's, and a help

Area A - You get dropped off in this industrial wasteland, reminicent of the Contra hangar level to a certain extent. You go through this level left-to-right punching everything in sight. You not only punch enemies (they EXPLODE YES!!!) you punch walls, power-ups, coins, bosses, basically everything in sight!

One of the coolest things about Shatterhand is the way you power-up and restore health. There are these little stations that are flashing red with either a power-up or it restores your life bar. However, in order to get the goodies from the station you notice there is a number on the station.
When you punch a bad guy and he explodes, a coin is left. A small coin is worth 50G, and a large coin is worth 500G. Power-ups are 100G

If you have enough coin, you can activate the power-up/health pack by pressing the down arrow on the NES D-pad. I did have some difficulty figuring out how this worked since the 2nd time I tried this I did not have enough G.

Finally I got it to work after trying it out when I did have enough coin, and you are now wearing the powered up red vest!!
This vest is handed down from many generations, and is not actually red, but blood stained from all the battles which it has witnessed.
Well that may not be true, but what is true is that enemies are now easier to kill and destruction comes much easier!!

Boss Battle - Area A
Once again, this game rules. You enter dramatically into the boss' chamber, and then suddenly the beast appears..... More to come soon, stay tuned!!

Tecmo Super Bowl Site coming soon...

Oh yes, the 8bit extravaganza will be bringing back the 8bit memories for this NFL Football season we have Tecmo Super Bowl released in 1991 with the 1990 rosters.

I ( Shaun ) will be playing one game a week with the Philadelphia Eagles as the current NFL season goes through its progression. The rosters will not be edited as you see on current youtube videos, it will be the exact 1990 roster featuring QB Eagles (Randle Cunningham), Fred Barnett, Reggie White, Jerome Brown, and so many others...

At the current point of the season the Eagles are 3-0 beating those hated Dallas Cowboys 46-7. A full mini website is currently being worked on to show you stats and each games outcome.

Check back at 8bitx.com every Sunday for you're Tecmo Superbowl Fix....E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

Father's Day: Gran Turismo 4
So the gaming weekend returns to the place it all started, the parent's place. Actually since they moved it's not the same at all, but you get the idea.

Gran Turismo 4:
Come to find my Dad downstairs with the lights out involved in a huge marathon race 1000+ mile circuit, and this race took 99 laps, which translated into 3+ hours to get the whole thing done. That is dedication! He did the old, pause while in the pits to get dinner and other stuff trick, you know the kind where you leave the console on but switch the TV back on and your mom asks why the TV is all fuzzy.

[The lights needed to be off for total concentration]
So I hung around and watched for a bit, silently since I did not want to ruin the seriousness of the moment, 90+ laps in hand and the last thing you would need is for some stupid noise to distract you and cause you the race at this point. So I made sure to just watch, hoping that the eyes on the screen wouldn't add to the weight of the pressure. It's one thing if you screw up on your own, but when you screw up in front of people that is just horrible.
[Lap 94/99]
Well I shot a question in when it looked like he lapped someone, and the closest car behind was 7 LAPS BACK! OK the questions were safe to ask, and there was actually no pressure at all. Found out that this race isn't the longest in the game, and there is a 24 hour race! Absurd!! There is so much detail in GT 4 with the setup of the car, tires, weight distribution, shocks, brakes, parts, all kinds of good stuff for car nuts. Well the one oversight according to my dad is that the computer has to pit every 25 laps, but you have to pit every 5!! Think about that, if you have to pit every 5 laps to their 25, they have a HUGE advantage 5x over on you! Mainly due to the tires, they just don't last as well as the computer's tires do.
[Lap 99/99 1st place finish]
Dad: 1st Place, won by 8 laps!
Still not done the circuit, and he is only 49% of the way through the game with 113 cars in stock (won 125). Sony talks about the PlayStation 2 as a 10 year console. GT 4 seems like a 10 year GAME.

Bad Dudes
Tonight we tried Bad Dudes from Data East! (Bad Dudes?) Bad Dudes is one of those games if you've played Double Dragon and then have tried it, you might think lesser of Bad Dudes. This game is a quality title however. The controls are a little stiff, and when multiple enemies attack you are going to take damage. I have yet to master the spinning helicopter kick, so this may only be a temporary frustration.

This is one of the most intense title screens I've ever seen on the NES. Is there any question about what is about to go down? I go 1 player tonight, since the wife is not game for some Bad Dude's action. Come to think about it, title screens like this are probably why women are scared of video games hahaha. Run muhahahah yes there is testosterone in this room and we're going to kick some ass!! CHEST BUMP!! HULK SMASH!!!!
[Striker > Blade]
I select Striker since I have bad luck with Blade. I think it stems back from my neighbor who actually had the game, Shaun, always picking Blade. Blade sucks for me. I don't know the difference between the two but I do know that Striker kicks ass, and Blade is a failed American Gladiator who is moonlighting in trying to rescue the President from ninjas. You can't rescue the president on a part-time job. That is just as useless as Blade is to me. Go try out for Street Fighter II and get your ass handed to you by Guile.

[Level 4 PWND]
So last night on the show, History of Beat Em Ups, I mentioned getting to Level 4 where the big metal boss destroys your face with an amazing standing 720 somersault dropkick. The way to defeat him is to do the helicopter kick, walk away, come back, and then kick him again. On the 2nd kick he will start the dropkick and you gotta get outta there. Rinse and Repeat.

The next level must be close to the end. This level is throwing wayyyyyy to much at me in order for it to be just another level. A tell-tale sign is that there was a boss in the level. That pretty much only happens toward the end of the game.
[The white lump on the right hand side of the green train is all that is left of my efforts tonight]
Too bad I died after trying this level time and time again, using up all my lives and continues. This shot was of the last time, before game rage would take over and something would be hurled at something expensive.

Progress: Level 5 (Train Level 2/3 way through I guess)

Interesting note, as I was taking these pics I noticed that the cable box looked just a tv show....

8bitx Game Blog
[Ninjas have kidnapped the president. Am I a Bad enough Dude to rescue him?]
I found after playing Renegade and writing up a recap of it, I discovered I really enjoyed putting down my thoughts on "paper" and publishing the trials and triumphs on the site.

We've always added game content related to shows, (8bit tourney, 16bit tourney, Game Rage, Games we've never played, halloween, thanksgiving, xmas, Street Fighter Tribute, and many more ), and I think it would be awesome to have up a blog for between shows just about video game quests.

Now as we go through the History of Beat Em Ups, I will be playing selections from our list, and recapping the action on these pages.

Next Challenge: Bad Dudes

Hope you enjoy!
-Will
