Mario Bros.

Goombas (also known as Little Goombas, in Japan as Kurib roughly translated as "chestnut people") are one of the major species of Mushroom World, and are among Mario and Luigi's most persistent foes.

Goombas resemble small, brown mushrooms, and are a fungus-based species like Toads, Amanitas, Spooks, and Shroobs. Goombas are physically weak, and aren't much of a threat to adventurers, as a single stomp usually defeats them.

The Koopa Troopas' name comes from King Bowser's Japanese name, Kuppa, which is itself derived from the Korean dish of the same name. The last name Troopa, was taken from the word "troop" in reference to the Koopa's role as footsoldiers in Bowser's army, with the a likely added on to make the name rhyme.

If jumped on, the Koopas would recede into their Shells, which could then be jumped on and used as projectiles with which to attack other enemies. If left alone for too long, however, the Koopas would right themselves.

Piranha Plants are large, carnivorous plants encountered throughout the Mario series; Piranha Plants are seemingly based-off Venus Flytrap, eating anything that approaches them.

The head of a Piranha Plant is most commonly either red or green with multiple other colors.

The first appearance of Piranha Plants release was in Super Mario Bros. as semi-common enemies who would inhabit Warp Pipes and attack by biting Mario or Luigi if they were close enough to them. Oddly, Piranha Plants won't emerge from their pipe if Mario or Luigi is touching or standing directly on top of it.

Piranha Plants could be defeated by shooting them with a fireball in a character's fire form, by kicking a Koopa shell at them or by touching them while empowered by a Starman.

Buzzy Beetles are beetle-like creatures with a hard, outer shell which is often blue. Buzzy Beetles will hide in their shells if jumped on, and, like a Koopa Shell, can be kicked to eliminate more enemies. The shell of the Buzzy Beetle is strong enough to resist fireballs, and as such, they cannot be defeated by fire. Although they are called Beetles, they more so resemble turtles like the Koopa Troopas than actual beetles.

Buzzy Beetles first appeared in World 4-2 of Super Mario Bros., an underground level. In challenge mode of the Super Mario Bros. game, all the Goombas are replaced with Buzzy Beetles.

A Bill Blaster is a black cannon that fires Bullet Bills. They are usually used as defense emplacements around fortresses and castles. Some Bill Blasters are pure black, while others have a design on them, usually a skull icon.

When the Mushroom Kingdom was overrun by Bowser in Super Mario Bros., Bullet Bills were Bowser's prime ammunition. Bullet Bills first appeared in World 5-1. They were usually shot from a large cannon, the Bill Blaster. Sometimes, Bullet Bills would be shot from random locations somewhere off-screen.

Lakitus are bespectacled Koopas who ride clouds through the skies. Lakitu's first appearance release-wise was in Super Mario Bros., whose manual aptly described him as "the mysterious turtle who controls the clouds". Lakitu debuted in World 4-1 in this game, where he would simply move back and forth at the top of the screen, occasionally ducking into his cloud to toss Spiny Eggs (which would hatch into adult Spinies upon collision with the ground) down at Mario or Luigi. Lakitu could be destroyed by both a stomp or Fireball, earning the heroes 200 points

These Spinies were only beatable by a Fire Flower or a Star. If they were hit from below, they would be bumped to the side like a Mushroom, instead of being flipped over, like a Koopa. Most levels that had a Lakitu-and-Spiny combination had many long staightaways with very few places to hide. These levels also usually had one or more very high blocks to jump on the Lakitu, thus stopping the Spinies for a time; though eventually, a new Lakitu would appear.

Bloopers (also known as Bloobers) are squid-like creatures that are found in the ocean.

Bloopers are one of the most resistant enemies in Super Mario Bros.. They only appear in underwater levels, and will follow Mario relentlessly. They can only be defeated by a Fireball, which, considering the fact that Bloopers are always fought in the water, is ironic. It appears that bloopers cannot touch the ground in Super Mario Bros, making it easy to avoid the Bloopers as small Mario.

Above from Mariowiki.com

Cheep-Cheeps are found in the underwater levels, swimming towards the player, where they can only be defeated with a fireball. They are found in all of the water levels, and can usually be seen with Bloopers. In some levels, red Cheep-Cheeps jump up from the bottom of the screen, creating random obstacles. These can be killed in a single jump, but it is hard to do it as they jump very high.

Above from Mariowiki.com

Hammer Bros. first appeared in Super Mario Bros. as enemies who are encountered infrequently. Often, they appear in groups of two, and attack by jumping from rows of bricks to the ground. Rarely, a Hammer Brother will appear alone. They will occasionally jump; this when the Player can run below them. On a side note, while normally immobile, if the player waited long enough, the Hammer Bros. would charge towards the player.

Above from Mariowiki.com

Bowser's first appearance (release-wise) was in Super Mario Bros. In Super Mario Bros., Bowser and his Koopa Troop took over the Mushroom Kingdom. He turned many of the Kingdom's defenders into inanimate objects, and kidnapped seven Mushroom Retainers and the only person who could undo his black magic, Princess Toadstool. He then turned seven of his minions into False Bowsers, and sent them to guard the Retainers in seven different castles while he personally saw to Toadstool's captivity in an eighth castle.

Fortunately for the Mushroom Kingdom, the Mario Bros. unexpectedly appeared and immediately set out to end Bowser's reign of terror. The heroes traversed the Mushroom Kingdom, freeing the Mushroom Retainers and eventually reaching the eighth castle and fighting with Bowser himself. The Koopa King waited for them on a bridge, attacking by spitting Fireballs and throwing Hammers. But he was sent careening into the lava below when one of the brothers destroyed the platform with an Ax placed at the far end of the bridge. Toadstool was liberated and her kingdom restored.

Contra

  • Stages 1 and 3: They just move across the screen and jump when they reach a ledge, although not necessarily reaching the opposite side if there is one.
  • Stages 2, 4, and 5: They fire bullets at you, but only at eye level. Duck to avoid.
  • Stages 6 and 7: They start ducking and firing bullets at you at the same time. These guys are cannon fodder but still have an annoying tendency to appear at the wrong time and/or flood the screen in certain stages. Key theme: kill them quickly and move forward so they don't swarm. They appear throughout the game and get a little tougher to kill as you progress.

Above from Strategywiki.org

  • Stages 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7: These annoying enemies stand in place and just fire at you, as simple as that. They have much better aim than the rest of the enemies and can fire in any direction, so killing them should be a priority. In stage 4 they appear with Terminal 2 until all of the lights are destroyed.

Above from Strategywiki.org

  • Stages 2 and 4: These guys only appear in the base stages and are a considerable pain. They come in two flavors: fast ones and slow ones. The fast ones will run across the screen throwing grenades roughly every few steps. The slow ones will stop every few steps but won't start tossing grenades until they line up with you. Fortunately, the time between when they toss grenades is long enough to allow you to squeeze a shot in.

Above from Strategywiki.org

  • Stages 3 and 5: They attack by firing a shell into the air that'll split into three before it hits the ground. It is difficult if not impossible to kill these guys, however, they can only fire directly upwards, so they bombs are usually easy to avoid. Be aware that you can be killed by the bullets as they travel upwards and back down as well as the explosions when they land.

Above from Strategywiki.org

  • Stages 1 and 3: Gray boxes with a rotating cannon, which are very common in the first half of the game, they're quite easy to destroy since they have a limited number of firing directions.

Double Dragon II

He is probably the easiest of the enemies to defeat and is able to carry knives and metal bars. They appear in pretty much every level.

Info from Double Dragon II Shrine

This guy's name is Roper. He's a solid punk who can be tough at times and weak at other times. He is able to carry dynamite (grenades) and throws the boomerang in Level 4, a weapon Billy and Jimmy can't use. He appears in almost every level too.

Info from Double Dragon II Shrine

She's probably the second easiest to kill, as she packs the two weakest weapons in the game: the Chain Whip and the Incendiary Bomb (flammable). They appear in most of the earlier levels.

Info from Double Dragon II Shrine

The boss of the first level. He has the power to disappear then reappear. He usually takes five or six good hits to defeat. He also appears in Level 7.

Info from Double Dragon II Shrine

This fellow is Right Arm, an all around scrapper and one of the thoughest non-bosses in the game. His only weapons are his fists which he will not hesitate to pound you with. The best way to defeat him is to just scrap it out or land an uppercut. He is in most of the levels.

Info from Double Dragon II Shrine

These ninja-like guys are really a pain to kill as they usually travel in packs of two and collectively work together to launch a full assault on you. Everything from shurikens to flipping kicks are at their disposal. They only appear in Levels 2 and 8.

Info from Double Dragon II Shrine

Relative to Abobo, Bolo is just as fierce. He has a little hair as apposed to his first installment counterpart. He can punch and kick as well as the new toss-over-the-shoulders move, excellent for throwing you directly into a pit. He appears in about half of the levels, sometimes as a boss.

Info from Double Dragon II Shrine

The new big guy in the game is this large fellow named Abore, with a vicious karate chop and a devastating shoulder block, he's definately a threat. Treat him as you would most big guys, with extreme caution. While he's not a strong as Abobo, he's much quicker and can swat you down in mid-air. He appears in half of the levels, sometimes as a boss.

Info from Double Dragon II Shrine

He looks a lot like Link from the Zelda series and has a sweep and flipping kick attack. They usually come in packs of two or three and aren't the best guys to get into a fist fight with. They appear in most of the later levels.

Info from Double Dragon II Shrine

This is a clone of Billy that you must take on in Level 8 before you fight the leader of the Shadow Warriors. He has all of the same moves as you (well he is you... or at least a darkened form of you). He also can disappear than reappear inside of you and shoot a fireball.

Info from Double Dragon II Shrine

This is the leader of the Shadow Warriors and Billy and Jimmy's prime target. Not much is known about this mysterious warrior going into the game. I can tell you that he's one tough cookie though with such moves as a handstand kick and a cyclone punch. He can also make like a jelly donut and disappear. Defeat him and you'll win the day.

One of the easiest bosses in the game. The best way to kill him is when you have full power. Just use your sword from a distance and it will shoot at him. Once you kill one head, it will transform and float around a room shotting fireballs at Link. Simply take out the other head with the same method to eliminate him.

This spider/crab like boss might seem impossible to defeat. There is only one weak spot of Gohma, and that is the eye. Once Gohma's eye opens up, send a arrow there. There are multiple colored Gohma's in the game. The red gohma will take one hit to the eye, while the blue gohma will take three hits. Gohma does shoot balls out at Link, just dodge them.

You have to strike your sword randomly to hit him. Once you hit him four times with your Magical Sword, finish him off with a Silver Arrow to defeat him. Zelda is waiting for you in the next room.

Info from Zeldadungeon

To defeat Helmethead, the easiest strategy is to to jump over him and use the downward thrust to take out his helmet. It will soon break off and float around the room shooting fireballs at you. While avoiding the fireballs, continue to strike him and he will eventually be defeated.

Info from Zeldadungeon

This boss is quite tricky, he is an Ironknuckle riding on a horse. He will charge at you constantly. So all you need to do is when he charges at you, jump up and downthrust onto his head and he will be injured. Do this repeatedly until he jumps off his horse and wants to fight hand to hand with you. This is when it gets hard. He fights just like every other ironknuckle except he is far quicker and throws swords at you, so do as you normally would fighting any other Ironknuckle except avoid the swords as much as possible. Only a few more hits and he is dead.

Info from Zeldadungeon

A slightly more difficult version of the Wizzrobe, Carock is much quicker. What you must do is use the Reflect Spell to reflect the beams he shoots at you back at him. Try and stay at one of the corners and kneal down. Eventually, you will get enough hits on him and he will be defeated.

Info from Zeldadungeon

I suggest using your shield spell here while fighting. This guy has a huge chain with a spked ball at the end. Best wait to hit him is to run at him, jump and slash him and jump back away from him immediately. After enough hits, he will be defeated.

Info from Zeldadungeon

Use your jump spell here to get around the lava pits easier. Estimate where he will come out of the lava and jump up and slash him as many times as you can. Repeat this process and he will soon be defeated.

As you enter the room, use your Thunder spell to weaken the Thunderbird. Now cast your shield, jump, and reflect spells. You have to jump high enough to slash his face to hurt him. While doing this, avoid the fireballs as much as possible (reflect spell helps this). Repeat hitting him this way by jumping around the room and counter attacking his every move until he is defeated.

The final boss is against yourself...or maybe Ganon, Shadow Link. He will counter attack your every move (a lot quicker and better than the Ironknuckle). So what you must do is pick a corner of the room and stay there. You can either kneal or stand up, but you must slash your sword constantly to be able to hit him. Once you got your technique down, keep atacking him and he will soon be defeated.
