Hip-Hop Producer Nujabes (Seba Jun) Passes Away at 36

The 8bitX Radio Network mourns the loss of Nujabes.
Justin from Radio Free Gamer has a write-up here, and will be doing a tribute at the end of his next show.

Nujabes Biography:
After Tsutchie, Nujabes was the second artist Shinichirō Watanabe chose to contribute to the background music and soundtracks of Samurai Champloo, an anime which blends a feudal Japan setting with modern anachronisms, especially in regards to hip hop culture.[1]

In addition to Japanese artists like Uyama Hiroto, Shing02 and Minmi, Nujabes has collaborated with underground American hip-hop acts CYNE, Cise Starr (as a solo apart from the hiphop collective CYNE), Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, CL Smooth, Terry Callier, as well as British rapper Funky DL and R&B singer Dwele. He is also a member of the production duo Urbanforest, an experimental collaboration with Nao T.

Passing:
On February 26th, 2010, Jun Seba was involved in a fatal car accident (the same day Japan experienced a 7.3 earthquake). He was 36 years old. His family had a private burial in Shimeyaka. Hydeout Productions has stated that although Nujabes has passed away, he left music behind to continue his legacy and will be released in the near future. http://e22.com/nujabes

Radio Free Gamer next Wednesday (March, 24th @ 7:00 PM EST) we're going to be joined by none other than Tommy Tallarico. Yes, that would be the co-founder of Video Games Live, G.A.N.G, and composer of an astonishing amount of games.

It's an absolute honor that he's going to be talking with both Justin Johnston and TenchuX over at Radio Free Gamer.

But wait... just us I thought... wouldn't it be a great idea to ask some questions?

So, during the interview there will be a special fan Q&A segment where we'll chose questions asked directly by you!

Now while Radio Free Gamer is typically live, the segment with Tommy Tallarico is going to be recorded earlier.

This Friday afternoon to be exact. I'm not going to be able to look through this thread or twitter and shuffle around questions at... lets say, after 12:01 PM this Friday.

One big point of discussion is going to be the upcoming Video Games Live concert in New Orleans at the Pontchartrain Center at 8 PM, April 1, 2010 with the Louisiana Philharmonic. (Tickets on Sale) :P

What's so important about this show is that it's being filmed for a NATION WIDE PBS SPECIAL! That's right, the whole country will get to experience just how awesome video game music is. This specific concert is a huge step forward in showing everyone just how valid of an art form video game music is. Tommy is currently working his butt off for the next three weeks preparing for it.

It doesn't end at this awesome Q&A with Tommy Tallarico!

We're also going to be covering the superb Donkey Kong Country 2 album (Serious Monkey Business) that was just released here on OCRemix! An album that itself is a groundbreaking achievement for the advancement of video game music.

I can already tell you that I will be asking Tommy what his thoughts are about fellow professionals David Wise, Grant Kirkhope, Robin Beanland making such an awesome contribution to the DKC 2 Album.

For those who want a little more insight into the Video Games Live experience I will have a feature article on www.elder-geek.com on what's looking like Thursday or Friday of next week. The article itself will also have a link to the interview in case you missed it airing live on Wednesday's Radio Free Gamer.

After two and a half years, Donkey Kong Country 2: Serious Monkey Business is finally released!

Serious Monkey Business has been in the works since around November 1, 2007, when initial invitations were extended. Since that fateful beginning, artists have poured hundreds, if not thousands, of hours into the music until shaped into its final form of this album. It's with much gladness that finally Geoffrey Taucer and I are able to bring this album to fruition and to all the listeners out there.

Whether it be new age, trance, rock ballad, or orchestral, I hope this album offers something for the listener & perhaps in a genre the listener may not normally enthused to listen to. If so, then the album has accomplished its purpose, however small. As a co-director, I would like to see people explore the possibilities offered by music of various genres, and I think we have succeeded in putting together a melting pot album with a lot of accessibility.

So without further ado, bon appetit!

Zelda makes it into the 8bitX Hall of Fame!!!

For 15 weeks The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time slayed it's competition, rendering 1/2 of it's dominant victories via shut-outs. Never challenged, a favorite to get into the Hall since the tournament was getting started, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time saw it's toughest competition yet. A rival of near equal dominance, a rival who's reputation permeated through all of video-game lore. Final Fantasy 7.
This is a dream match-up which storylines can be written from better weapon, main character, love interest, villian, mode of transportation, hero, and so on and so forth.
The war began on this night March 3rd 2010, and roughly 2 hours later fate would intervene, a shiny object glistened in the light with the hearts of those who had spent their lives with these games hung in the balance. She was swift with her decision, and as the coin landed on the heads, I hung mine.
"Ladies and gentlemen" I said with a regrettable smile, "It's HEADS, the winner of the 32/64 bit tournament is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time".

TenchuX writes in a poem during the battle:
I looked high to the clouds to see what was before us, when down from the sky descended Link of course... and with a right hand slash he took off Randy's head, and not a second later Justin was dead. I’m not sure if they made it to heaven, I am just glad two votes were lost for Final Fantasy VII.

Justin weighs in on the Final Battle: Zelda Ocarina of Time vs Final Fantasy 7

This is a near-impossible decision. Both games are nostalgic, but in different ways.

The Zelda series has always stood as an example of simplicity and purity in storytelling: Link's adventures are modeled after Shigeru Miyamoto's childhood exploring woods and caves. This is the case for OoT, but we also see Link as an adult facing a very real threat from Ganon. The high point of this game, and the feature I remember most, is the gameplay. I'll always remember how to get through all the dungeons and beat all the bosses. The music was great as well.

Of course FF7 has a great (if not convoluted and poorly translated) plot, one of the best in video game history. Cloud is a complex character with some real issues (everyone he gets close to seems to die), and I've never been as motivated to defeat a villian as I have to beat Sephiroth. Cloud's struggle to find self-worth and a cause to fight for, the loss of Aerith, and the final confrontation with Sephiroth are all moments that I'll remember for the rest of my life. I definitely won't remember most of the intermediary moments and random battles, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game. And, of course, who doesn't get chills when they listen to the FF7 soundtrack and the numerous live performances and covers of it.

How am I supposed to decide here? Both stand out among the greatest games ever, and both envoke fond memories. This is seriously going to take a good deal of thought and reflection!

Wow we have set ourselves up for the Championship show with 2 games left standing.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time vs Final Fantasy VII

Suprisingly the game that mopped the floor was Zelda shutting out Goldeneye 7-0, where as FFVII squeaked by 4-3 with the final vote going to TenchuX via the phone call to the show.
