No Live Show This Week, but Here's the Win and Fail!
Hey all. Sorry to inform you that my poor 5-year old compy's last act was to post last week's episode onto the podcast. I'm in the middle of building a sweet new one, but I couldn't get everything running in time to do this week's show. I'll try to put something together over the weekend to post on the podcast, but right now I don't have a computer with which to do the live show (I'm updating from my work compy, in case you were wondering).
If you were interested, my win of the week would undoubtedly have to be Batman: Arkham Asylum. I've only played the demo, but even that was very impressive. The stealth gameplay reminded me of Metal Gear Solid, particularly the "detective vision" (a more useful version of the Solid Eye). The melee combat is very simple and is built around swift attacks and massive counters, reminiscent of Assasin's Creed. Gotham's best and worst are all here, many voiced by their actors from the fantastic 90's cartoon, Batman: The Animated Series (Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, etc.). Tie it all up in a beautiful(ly creepy) Arkham Asylum running on the same graphics engine that built Gears of War, and you have a sure winner!
My fail of the week goes to Little Big Planet for the PSP. This week at Gamescom (the European video game conference, which I was going to compare to our E3 but don't have the nerve to do so as not nearly as much happens at the former) MediaMolecule made several announcements concerning the PSP version of LBP. Not only did they simplify the game world (you could jump back and forth between 3 two-dimensional planes in the PS3 version, but there is only 1 in the PSP version) but they removed multiplayer! The console version hyped itself on creating levels which you could play through with your friends. It emphasized the shared experience of multiplayer along with the creativity of making your own levels. Hopefully the map editor will not see any drastic cutbacks, as I'm sure there are many LBP fans out there who are already shying away from the PSP version.
Anyway, I'll try and get something on the podcast this weekend, assuming I can get my new computer assembled and working. Stay tuned for Bonus World 1!
